Great denim fades are earned, not washed in. Every cycle strips indigo evenly, which is exactly what you don't want — character comes from wear, contrast from restraint in the wash.
Wash rarely, spot-clean often
Most denim needs washing after four to ten wears, not one. Air jeans between wears, spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth, and freeze the folklore — freezers don't sanitize anything.
When you wash: cold and inside out
- Turn jeans inside out and button them up to protect the face.
- Cold water with a small dose of mild detergent, gentle cycle.
- Wash with other darks — never with lint-shedding towels.
Never tumble dry
Heat is denim's fastest ager: it fades indigo flat, stresses seams, and shrinks the fit you broke in. Shake out, smooth flat, and hang by the waistband in shade. Sun bleaches one side while the other stays dark.
Raw or selvedge pairs deserve extra caution — or hand them to our dry cleaning team for a clean that protects the fade you're building.
