The first five minutes decide most stains. What you do before the wash matters more than any product — and the most common instinct, hot water, is usually the worst move.
The golden rules
- Blot, never rub. Rubbing grinds the stain deeper and frays fibers.
- Cold water first. Heat sets protein stains like blood, egg, and dairy permanently.
- Work from the outside in to keep the stain from spreading.
By stain type
Coffee and tea: flush with cold water, dab with a drop of dish soap, rinse. Red wine: cover with salt to draw it out, then cold rinse — skip the white-wine myth. Grease: sprinkle baking soda, let it sit, brush off, then dish soap before washing. Ink: dab with rubbing alcohol on a cloth, never pour directly.
Know when to stop
If a stain survives two careful attempts, stop and let a professional try — repeated home chemistry can set what a specialist could have lifted. Every FreshFold order includes hand stain treatment at no extra charge.
